“Girl Friday” by Cotton Mather
The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
Just trying to jumpstart 2017 here, having made it through another holiday not too much worse for wear. That combustible combo of holiday stress handing straight off to relief by way of copious food and drink didn’t sucker me too badly this time. I pumped the brakes on the Christmas morning champagne and waited for the evening’s Irish whiskey with my friend Jack. When he offered me a refill and I passed saying, “Nah, I don’t want to see us on the front of the New York Times like Lennon and Nilsson with tampons taped to our heads”, my daughter quipped, “somehow I don’t think that would make the New York Times.” Ouch!
“Moderation in all things including moderation” the saying goes. Some of us don’t need the disclaimer. I knew someone who worked a brief stint for me for who had never met the word. More like a “Girl Sunday Afternoon” than a “Girl Friday”.
16. Delight – expounds on the principles of harmony, giving warning as to how often we’re undone in the pursuit of worldly pleasures, when we choose self-satisfaction over balance. Or as Master Alfred Huang said, “The name of this gua is Delight…but the text is not so delightful”.
